Any Book Suggestions?

I am in such a mood to read lately! I was wondering if any of you have any book suggestions....

The last book I read was suggested by a blog friend and I enjoyed it so much I thought I would ask for suggestions of what to add to my reading list.

I am thinking about reading the "Hunger Games" series but I don't know the first thing about these books...

Have you read them?

I also considered reading "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" series but quickly dismissed that. I have seen all the movies (the Swedish versions not the American) and I am not sure I could make it through the books. That first movie was pretty darn difficult to watch. In fact, it was so difficult that I may not even watch the English version of the film. Have you seen these/read these?Has anyone read this one?

Have you taken your tree down yet? I haven't. I DID take all the "Christmas-y" things from my antique mall booth on Tuesday and I hope to get all the "Christmas-y" things in our house down tomorrow. I want the house to be clean, peaceful, and relaxing on New Year's Day with no chores left. I just want to cozy up with some hot tea and read all day.

The Hunger Games is amazing. Read it. It'll go fast. The plot sounds cruel, but you find yourself submerged and rooting for the heroine. I also didn't mind The Dragon Tattoo book. Yes, harsh in places, but it was a well written story. I have never seen any of the moviesthough.

I always suggest people read A Confederacy of Dunces. I also suggest anything by Cormac McCarthy. I read Shopgirl (a novella) in college and it was good. Have you read Wicked? Another favorite is Shantaram. It is really long but so worth reading!

I was just complaining to M last night that I haven't read nearly enough recently. I used to finish at least a book a week but have gotten away from that in the last few years. I'm finally finishing The Help and it has been wonderful.

I always set aside some time at the holidays to read. It is my favorite thing to do. I have not been reading too much fiction lately and do need to get back to it. Been reading how to put in a root cellar and do worm composting. LOL!

Just wanted to say I saw you read Killer Stuff, so glad you liked it! I learned lots from the book but of course have forgotten most of it by now. I started reading Hunger Games but had to abandon it. I'm the only person I know that couldn't get into it, so I might have to try it again.

As for Dragon Tattoo, I have to think that watching it would be harder than reading it. I read the series and didn't love the first book but enjoyed the other two. Can't wait to see what you choose to read!

Hunger Games is fabulous and you will never regret reading all three books. I wish I could just loan them to you but you're too far away. You should also read Same Kind of Different as me. It's a true story that will make you really think about how you serve the world around you in a totally amazing way.

There are so many good books to recommend from an English major perspective, but I suggest finding a genre you enjoy and just throw yourself into it one book at a time. I started African American lit during my thesis writing and fell MADLY in love (which I totally did not think I would) with Toni Morrison first, and then Maya Angelou (specifically I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings), and Zora Neale Hurston (Their Eyes Were Watching God). Those books made me really want to delve into so many genres that I never thought I could enjoy.

Now, for some lighter reading I love Dean R. Koontz, Lisa Scottoline, Patricia Cornwell, and of course all the Harry Potter books. The first three authors are suspense/horror/law-crime-type novelists if you haven't heard of them. Cornwell, you will have to start at the beginning but you'll be addicted to them all.

Also, I am totally with Katie Lake about Cormac McCarthy. And A Confederacy of Dunces is a book you must read because it's absolutely amazing, funny, fabulously written, and a true classic. Plus, O'Toole killed himself before it was published so there is a tragic feel to it as well. Okay, so those are just my initial thoughts on it, but if you want to throw yourself into the true classics I can recommend some places to start (plus, anything by Poe is so well worth it).

I started "Little Women" last night. It was one I downloaded a while back and decided to read it - not sure how I went through High School without having to read it...

Confederacy of Dunces is one of my all time faves -- SO funny! I have also read his other book "Neon Bible" and its not all that great :(

I have read a Toni Morrison book in the past (The Bluest Eye) and didn't care for it so I guess I need to give her another go.

I have never read the Harry Potter series but have heard great things about it.

I have not read Wicked but will put it on my list for sure!

Carrie- I LOVED "Killer Stuff" it has inspired me to really "study" antiques. I plan on setting my second desk up in my art room as a study area. It really made me think more about knowing my stuff and not just picking things that I think are great decorative pieces. It will not change the way I shop but I will be able to recognize something fabulous if it is right under my nose! Thanks so much for the suggestion!

The movie Shop Girl was the same as the book and I loved the cast but not so much the movie. The book, however, was very well written and so good. Also, a very short read since it's a novella.

LOVED the dragon tattoo girl series, gobbled up all 3 books as fast as i could. the mister read those hunger game books, i have no idea what they're about. i'm afraid he'll tell me the ending if i ask, he's been known to do that. Do they have anything to do with eating?
